Supporting Deprived Children and Families

We have rigorous checks in place in order to make sure donations reach children or families most in need. As these needs can vary, we set up a plan best suited to the child or family in need. Funds to support children or families are raised through monthly-sponsorships or one-off donations.

Most often, donations are spent to support children's education. We make sure that the child being sponsored is doing well in their studies and can truly benefit from the sponsorship programme.

Our child sponsorship programmes aim to support children directly, however we also educate families so that they can further support and encourage their children to make the most out of this opportunity. Additionally, donating towards a family would provide food for the family on a monthly basis.

Tablets were donated to four student children in Sarabeleh and Shahid Keshvari towns in Kermanshah province, Borujerd in Lorestan province, and Pakdasht in Tehran province. They urgently needed these tablets for their online school lessons during the Corona pandemic. Three of these students have physical and motor disabilities ( in the hands and feet).

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is the most common and severe form of muscular dystrophy, present from birth. It usually affects boys from early childhood. DMD is characterised by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. Over time, this causes increasing disability.

The mutations are often inherited from a person's parents. Hence, if there is a family history of DMD, early diagnosis of developing the condition and appropriate physical and psychological support could improve the quality of life and mobility of a child.

There is currently no known cure for DMD. However, a variety of treatments can help manage the condition, and help with the physical disabilities and problems that may develop.

Quality of Life and Life Expectancy

Although the average life expectancy of children with DMD in Europe, America and Canada is 28 years, with some Duchenne adults reaching 30-40 years of age, this is not the case in Iran. In Iran the the majority of children with DMD have a life expectancy of teenage or early 20’s. Many children with DMD in Iran deteriorate rapidly in the early stages of the condition, due to a lack of access to physiotherapy and occupational therapy to maintain mobility. These children progress to immobility and dependence much earlier, experience increased rates of chest and urinary tract infections, emaciation, limb contractures, fractures and the spinal distortions that can lead to earlier cardiac and respiratory failure. When their families are no longer able to care for them, children with DMD are often moved to inadequately resourced institutions, where they may die alone and unattended at night- usually as a result of respiratory dysfunction and subsequent respiratory or cardiac failure.

The progression of the condition can be slowed with access to early diagnosis, early initiation of physical and pharmacological treatment, good nutrition and access to technology to support cardiac and respiratory function. When children with DMD

If supported and catered for their needs, children with DMD can stay engaged and thrive in life because they are intellectually able despite their physical disabilities. This involves the training and support of those involved in their day-to-day lives, and the provision of necessary adaptations and equipment to improve access to schools and communal activities. In Iran, children with DMD from disadvantaged communities are often denied access to education because of their poor health, the lack of facilities to cater for disabled children in schools and the inability of parents to safely transport them there. Poor families struggle to provide even the basic needs of children with DMD.

Announcement of the date and sale of tickets for the screening of "Game On" at the London Film School will be announced shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Iranian filmmaker, Sohrab Kavir's family was completely devastated by the loss of three of Kavir's brothers to the inherited familial form of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most severe, fatal, genetic disorder diagnosed in early childhood. Kavir was particularly close to his youngest brother Davood who died in very distressing circumstances. Davood’s death left Kavir severely traumatised by survivor’s guilt
which unrecognised had huge implications on the course of his life.

Kavir subsequently moved to the UK, where he had the opportunity to meet with Matin, a young Iranian child with DMD who shared his brother's passion for football. That was the catalyst for what would become an 8-year documentary project.

As Kavir got to know Matin and his family, he became aware of the health and social care resources available to children with DMD in the UK, compared to Iran. He soon realised the huge significance and implications of this disparity for Iranian children with DMD.

            Synopsis

Sohrab Kavir’s film, “Game On” begins as an idea to arrange an international online football tournament between Iranian and English Duchenne children but soon develops into a cathartic journey that enables Kavir to focus his grief and his passion for film-making on bringing the plight of the Iranian Duchenne children to the attention to a worldwide audience.

Kavir returns to Iran to find players for the Iranian Duchenne online football team and his travels take him across the country where he meets Duchenne families from all socioeconomic backgrounds. He listens to their stories and comes face-to-face with the harsh day-to-day reality of a life without the medical treatment, social and financial support that so many of us take for granted.

"Game On" emphasises not only the tragedy, inequality and injustice of such short lives but ultimately the resilience, optimism and determination of the children, the love of the families for each other and the amazing resourcefulness of Iranian people in the face of incredible hardship. It highlights a system that does not recognise the rights of a child with a disability to have equal access to education and healthcare, and most importantly to have the opportunity to fulfil their dreams and ambitions in the precious time they have. Most importantly Kavir’s film is a testament to how granting even small wishes can mean the entire world to a child and how the memories of the people we love can become a powerful force for driving forward change.

Kavir continues to campaign along with his sister Mitra to improve the lives of Iranian DMD children in the memory of their three brothers.

Iran is a stunningly beautiful country with a unique history.

We encourage participants to add a week of independent travelling onto their
expedition, to properly experience the country once you have a feel
for the culture and language. You can experience Iran's hospitality, see the capital Tehran, cultural city of Esfahan, visit famous palaces, museums, explore the traditional old-market bazaar and create an unforgettable experience. We are happy to help you book trips and expeditions, or wave
you off independently- the choice is yours.

           Dear supporters,

Having raised well over £2,200 through efforts of various groups and individuals for the recent flood victims, it is a pleasure to report back to you on the progress.

Our trustees immediately entered communications with Helal Ahmar (Red Crescent), as well as establishing links with the local ministries of Gorgan and Kermanshah Provinces, to coordinate any primary needs for the affected areas. However, it was advised that all the primary needs were being addressed and the best and most effective use of this fund would be to

build a permanent children’s play area for one of the affected areas

           .

Agh Ghalla is one of the flooded cities in Golestan province and following our trustee’s site visit to the area, a location for a new play ground has been selected and plans drawn up.

We believe that our collective efforts will have a permanent effect on supporting the children of this area.

We are taking part in a group charity challenge to climb Mount Damavand (5671m) and raise funds for children in need. We will be climbing the highest volcano in Asia, to support the work of Panah in helping those in desperate need of our help, including street children, kids with HIV and the ones in care-homes.

While the training for this climb has been tough and it will be a gruelling 4 day challenge, it is such a fantastic opportunity to raise a lot of money for a great cause.

You can sponsor us or donate to this campaign - your donations will go straight to provide support to the children that desperately need your help.

You can take part in climbing the summit of Damavand - given that you are able to raise a minimum of £250 to donate to Panah Children Charity, which will go to children in need. You will also have to pay for costs of travel and accommodation.

You will be accompanied by our experienced, english-speaking team, who have climbed the summit before, and we can suggest cheaper accommodation options suggested by locals.

Mofid Children's Hospital admits 155,000 outpatients annually, 13,000 are bed admissions, 5,080 of which require operations.

Panah has supported the following Equipment Projects

Project I (2011): Keyhole Laproscopic Equipment from Karl Storz of Germany, costing £54,979.

This was Panah's first equipment project with Mofid Hospital, undertaken in 2011. Keyhole Surgical Equipment was of utmost importance for Mofid Hospital, as with the new equipment children would benefit from the reduced risk that surgeries can carry. The risk of fatalities can also be reduced as a result of reduced use of anaesthetics during the operation and reduced infection, costs and recovery time.

The equipment was delivered to the hospital in January 2012. It was estimated that 350-400 of the operations would annually benefit from the Laparoscopic equipment for Tracheoscopy Arthroscopy and Neuroendroscopy.

The funds were raised through our “In Search of Simorgh” and a kind donation of an anonymous donor of over £17,000.

Mother: "My son has had 3 days of stomach pains and no appetite. He was admitted last night and diagnosed with appendicitis. It was decided to use the Keyhole surgical method, where there is no need for an open operation, using a small incision, a laparoscopic guide tube and I appreciate they are using this method on my son."

[Why did you come to the hospital?]

Son: "-because I was feeling sick, with stomach ache and diarrhoea. I came here to Mofid Hospital and was told that I have appendicitis and it is to be removed using special equipment."

A young boy was admitted to Mofid Hospital with stomach pain and had been diagnosed with appendicitis. The operation itself took less than 5 minutes and the patient had returned home at the end of the day, with only 2cm stitched cut to his stomach. The equipment also allowed the appendix to be removed using a special sealer, without bleeding.

A video taken at Mofid Hospital demonstrates how operations are carried out regularly using the equipment provided by Panah.

Project II, 2013: Stryker 7 Precision Surgical Drill and Saw Set, costing £37,430

This equipment was essential for cutting and accessing areas required in major cranial and bone surgeries, to minimise damage to bones and surrounding tissues- supporting early recovery, particularly for infants and children.

The funds were raised with a combination of £4,000 donations from a BIMA Medical Association during their event. Another $5,000 anonymous donation and funds raised through Panah's charity events.

Project III, 2014: Stryker Brain Navigator, costing £202,543

The Stryker Brain Navigator was necessary for cranial surgeries such as brain tumours and epilepsy. The importance of this equipment was that the hospital carries out over 100 operations annually “blind” as they did not know where a tumour was or what issues they may face during a cranial operation. Their other need (2010) was the maintenance of the unsafe structure of the buildings, which are very old (Kolangi). However, there is no alternative for APCL but to continue using the building (by the children and staff), until sufficient funds become available for re-location and re-development. Funds needed for relocation of the "entire children centre" to another local building (estimated cost £20,000) + Funds for redevelopment of the centre is estimated at £100,000 + Funds to purchase one or two of the neighbouring houses (prior to re-development) (anticipated cost £80,000 each property).

Primary School Teachers' Project in Fonoj Village

One of the educational problems in deprived villages is the use of low-level forces, or forces requiring specialised training courses in spite of having a high degree of service, due to low academic records or constant changes in the content of textbooks.

Panah Children's Charity believes that teachers are the most important factor in producing knowledge and the most important educational capital. Hence, the first step in turning schools into effective learning organisations is the empowerment and advancement of human resources active in this field. With the advance of this goal, Panah studied the schools of Fonoj as the first centre for the implementation of this plan.

Fonoj is an area of 7,773 square-km in the Sistan and Baluchistan province, 550km from the centre of the province. The initial plan included Fonoj Primary Schools and, if successful, would be implemented at higher levels; hence the initial target community is preschoolers and elementary students.

Panah Children's Charity recently visited the city to evaluate the training needs of Fonoj. A brief report of the first visit of the children's charitable charity to Fonoj is as follows:

The number of preschool students in this city is 1,398. Number of elementary school students is 8,151. The number of teachers is 477 (300 male and 177 female teachers).

Of these teachers, 10 have diplomas, 151 are undergraduates, 306 are undergraduate students, and 10 have master's degrees.

Of these teachers, 35 were college students, 49 were purchasers of educational services, 69 were recruited from the MehrAffrin project (Literacy Movement) and 21 were recruited in the 92 year test.

The school principal provided her uniform with all her students' personal rights.

One of the requirements of this school is the lack of educational space. Outdoor preschoolers studying in the winter is problematic.

The school is leased and there is a serious need for school building.

Teachers say most of the problems are in the field of Persian language courses and Mathematics; teachers in this field need further education.

Project III (2010): Treatment of newly born twins with a serious infection

Most Paediatric hospitals are part funded by the government, but the majority of costs are borne by the patients. There are many people who do not have medical insurance and have difficulty making the remainder payment for any treatment their children may require. The costs for some treatments are very high running, into thousands of pounds, but in other cases, a few hundred pounds can save the life of a child. One such case was the newly-born twin girls, both of whom had a bacterial infection. The hospital’s procedure allows such patients with emergency needs to be treated, while a variety of donors try to eventually cover the cost of the hospital. However, the patient cannot be discharged until the outstanding amount has been cleared. More importantly, the cost of medication is not provided by the hospital, but is procured from the private sector. This means that no medication is administered until payment has been received. In this respect, payment for medication is more urgent to ensure timely treatment of the illness has been carried out.

The twin girls were born on 6th of August 2009 prematurely, when their mother’s water broke early. Within days both girls developed problems due to being premature and suffering from internal infection - one in her lungs and the other in her heart. The twins were admitted as an emergency case to Ali Asghar’s Hospital and were temporarily named 'Ghol 1' and 'Ghol 2'.

Ghol 1 was suffering from immaturity of lungs (RDS) shallow breathing and lung infection. Ghol 2 suffered from immaturity of heart (PDA) as well as incorrect heart valve function and faint heart beats (FHR).

Panah Children Charity and True Volunteers Foundation jointly covered the costs of both children's medication and operations and were hospitalised for 56 days.

Ghol 1 was discharged and recovered well, but still required returning for regular check-ups. Ghol 2 was transferred to the “Rajaee” hospital for further a specialist heart operation. However, within days she developed internal infection again and was re-admitted to Ali Asghar Hospital. She has now recovered from this infection and has been discharged.

The parents of the twins were financially very poor and could not afford their children’s medication or treatment. They were first time parents. The father of the children worked at a brick-baking factory as a day labourer. However, he had a back-disc problem and was not able to lift and could only do light work. The mother worked as cleaner and washed clothes in other people’s homes. One of the grandfathers who also lived with them also needs to work to make ends meet for their day-to-day lives. The grandmother was frail and could not work, but stayed at home to look after the house. All the family lived in one room.

Get in touch with us if you would like to represent Panah Children Charity at your University/School/Work-place/Organisation.

follow laws, health & safety regulations, get permissions and respect the venue and people around you. Be approachable and friendly!

Here is a small list of fundraising ideas I have compiled, and keep checking the blog for new ideas! You can also download a sponsorship form if you would like to collect sponsors in person. Alternatively, you can create your own fundraising page on JustGiving.

Cinema Screening ( / Games Night / Karaoke Night)

           Pick a popular movie and hold a cinema screening;

or borrow games from friends and family to set up a board and video games' event

or find some YouTube videos for Karaoke to set up a karaoke night

You can charge an entrance fee for the above events that goes to charity.

Additionally you can set up a concessions stand (or maybe incorporate a bake sale?) and raise extra money by selling popcorn, drinks and delicious snacks.

          Dinner Party

An event which can be hosted all year round, on its own or in support of other events (where a percentage of profits goes to charity), a dinner party can be adapted to appeal to most people. Keep in mind the timing of your event, if you are hosting in December you could combine it with a New Years party.

          Sponsors

You can organise a sponsored walk, litter pick, bike-a-thon, read-a-thon or swim-a-thon. There are endless options. You can give yourself a personal challenge, or organise a collaborative event e.g. sponsored run with a local running-club. You can even challenge yourself to give something up, such as chocolate, crisps or TV, and ask friends & family to sponsor you.

Bake Sale ( / Burger / Pancake / Hot Chocolate / Tea Sale)

From a small one-off cake stall to a fancy tea party,
bake sales are easy to
organise, don’t cost much to set up and are bound to be a success. Take a look at the Food Standards Agency website in advance to ensure that you follow their guidance when selling food. Please accurately label any food with any ingredients that could cause an allergic reaction. Try to provide a couple of speciality items like nut, gluten or dairy-free options for those with
allergies or special diets.

Remember to take paper plates/cups, napkins
, any cutlery, tongs and disposable gloves (for serving food)
, money-box for donations
and bin bags.

            Car Boot Sale

Good as either an individual or team activity for raising funds for the charity. There are quite a few car boot sales, especially over the summer months. You can raise money and get rid of unwanted stuff at the same time. Bear in mind that car boot sales can be of variable success and depend an awful lot on what you have to sell. Collecting stuff to sell from all your friends and family might help increase your stock and all unsold/unwanted items can be taken to a charity shop at the end.

Disaster Relief for Earthquake Victims

Rescue efforts are underway after a powerful earthquake struck at 21:18 local time on 12th November 2017, killing at least 400 people, injuring more than 6,700 and leaving 70,000 homeless. Most of those who died were in the town of Sarpol-e-Zahab in Kermanshah and other parts of the province.

Panah Children Charity has set up a Disaster Emergency Fund Raising Appeal to help those children who are affected by this earthquake. Priority for the urgent needs would be assessed locally in coordination with the international organisations and other relief agencies. All donations for this appeal will be spent on the earthquake victims only and disseminated directly by our own team members.

So far, 12 tents along with other non-cash donations have been sent to Kermanshah for accommodating people.

Kamran's 3,000km Trek for Children in Need

All children deserve a childhood beyond the stigma of poverty and abuse, with access to good education. Luckily I found a charity doing fantastic work for children in need and have delivered donors' money, directly to those that need it the most.

My challenge was a 3,000km Solo Trek from Qeshm in the Persian Gulf, to Gorgan on the Caspian Sea. The aim was, to raise money to support Panah Children Charity's work to help the children in need.

For my part, I planned, financed and completed a distance of 3,000 km, crossing deserts and mountains en route. My challenge started on the 10th October 2016 and finished 101 days later, in February 2017.

All the funds raised, have already been distributed to remote children care homes and charity centres along the route for their education and sports' facilities, as well as projects carried out by Panah Children Charity afterwards.

           My challenge took me through:

           Bandar Abbas - Lar - Darab - Shiraz - Yasouj - Samiram - Broujerd - Shahreh Kord - Isfahan - Kashan - Arak - Malaya - Hamedan - Saveh - Tehran - Firooz Kooh - Shamirzad - Sari - Behshahr - Bandareh Torkaman - ending in Gorgan.

         Check out my fundraising page:

In addition, Kamran's fundraising supported the following projects:
